Yoga and Swami Shivananda of Rishikesh
Swami Shivananda of Rishikesh was a doctor by profession but eventually became a swami to settle in Rishikesh. Rishikesh is the main yoga town/center in Northern India. Every year thousands of yogis and wonna-be yogis from around the world come to Rishikesh to study yoga like with the Divine Life Society whose founding father is Swami Shivananda. Shivananda Yoga Centers can be found all over the world. Shivananda has written a fast library of books on spiritual and mind matters, and the integral yogic path.
One of Swami Shivananda’s main disciples is Swami Satyananda who established the Bihar School of Yoga. They continue with the tradition of publishing books on all aspects of yoga through the Yoga Publication Trust. In Bihar they say:
“Yoga is a science of consciousness, a science of personality, and a science of creativity.”
Swami Shivananda’s ashram in London Putney was my first experience of living in an ashram. Living at an ashram even if it is only for a few weeks is mind blowing and life changing. Depending on what you want to do with your life, an ashram stay can be a turning point in your life towards higher values, the inner life, or even the beginning of a life-long spiritual journey.
